Charlie Sheen Changes His Name … To His Old Name

When you think back to the Charlie Sheen meltdown of 2011, the veteran actor could have walked away with several nicknames. There were his witticisms about “winning” and “tiger blood” and “Adonis DNA,” that could have easily left the 47-year-old with several new creative aliases. Alas, his stage name survived and the world continued to call him Charlie Sheen.

But, Charlie Sheen is changing his name now. The actor will divert back to his birth name, Carlos Estevez.

The news broke when a trailer for director Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming film Machete Kills leaked and showed Sheen credited Carlos Estevez in the title cards. Along with Sheen, the follow-up to 2010′s Machete also stars Lady Gaga, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, and returning cast members Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez.

Sheen changed his name to Charlie at an early age to stop getting confused with his uncle, also named Carlos. He adopted his father’s — Apocalypse Now actor Martin Sheen — stage name for his last name.

“I thought, I got enough problems trying to get an acting job, so I invented Martin Sheen,” Sheen’s father, born Ramón Estevez, told James Lipton during a 2003 Inside the Actors Studio taping. “It’s still Estevez officially. I never changed it officially. I never will. It’s on my driver’s license and passport and everything. I started using Sheen, I thought I’d give it a try, and before I knew it, I started making a living with it and then it was too late. In fact, one of my great regrets is that I didn’t keep my name as it was given to me. I knew it bothered my dad.”

Why the younger Sheen is changing his name at this point in his career is unknown. He is still credited as Charlie Sheen on IMBD. It’s possible it is a one-time thing or possibly that he just wants to start with a clean slate.

Machete Kills hits theaters Sept. 13.
